Euro Betting: Switzerland vs Turkey, 20 June
Final Group Games | Group A | Baku
Their Euros So Far
So far, this has been a Euros to forget for both nations. Switzerland drew with Wales, but were left to rue missed chances. Then this was followed up with a 3-0 hammering by Italy. For Turkey, it’s been even worse, after their successive 3-0 and 2-0 defeats to Italy and Wales, their final game leaves their Euro fate hanging by a thread.
Even after their defeat to Italy, the Swiss could still finish in the top two of the group. if they beat Turkey in their final game and Wales lose to Italy, Wales and Switzerland would then be separated on goal difference to determine who goes through automatically with the Italians. If Switzerland lose to Turkey, they will be eliminated from the Euros.
The Turks can no longer finish in the top two of the group and must target a high-scoring (and ideally low conceding) victory against Switzerland to come third in the group. This would then leave their fate down to hopefully being one of the four best third placed teams across the group stages.
Turkey have won eight of the fifteen games between the sides, with Switzerland gaining victory in four of those contests. Their final game of Group A will be the first time they’ve met since a memorable encounter at Euro 2008.
Turkey pulled off a remarkable comeback victory in that game, with an injury time winner from Arda Turan giving Turkey their second ever Euro finals win. The Turks famously progressed as far as the semi-finals, their greatest international tournament achievement. Switzerland finished bottom of the group.
Both nations also faced each other in a 2006 World Cup playoff game and a Euro 96 qualifier, with Switzerland coming out on top on away goals in the former, and each sharing 2-1 away victories in the latter.
Can Switzerland save their summer? Or will Turkey survive another day?
